Introducing cardcast.gg

cardcast was born out of curiosity. I got back into Magic: The Gathering a few years ago during the pandemic with my friend group. First time we played, they told me to grab a webcam and hop on a site called Spelltable. As an engineer by trade, I was immediately intrigued. It had the basics needed to play a game of Magic, but clicking on a card and seeing it come up in the sidebar. That was a game-changer for me.

So we started playing regularly on Spelltable. It was amazing. I got to hang out with my friends when the world was going through a tough time. I got to rekindle my love of Magic: The Gathering. All was well in the world.

One night, curiosity got the better of me: “How does it work?” was the nagging question at the back of my mind. So I started looking into how Spelltable’s card detection logic worked. That’s the night that cardcast was born, but I didn’t know it at the time.

I’ll save the journey and technical details for future posts, let me tell you about cardcast. Cardcast allows you to play Magic: The Gathering online with your friends, all you need is a webcam.

It has what most playgroups need:

  • Voice/Video Chat (Broadcast your table and talk to your friends)
  • Game State Tracking (turns, turn timers, health, poison counters, etc.)
  • Virtual Cards + Tokens (overlay a token or a stolen card over your play area)
  • Automatic Card Detection (no need to click on a card anymore, just hover)

I’m actively working on improving cardcast, with new features out almost every week. If you want to give it a shot, hit the orange button in the upper right of the page, no signup required.
